Located in one of Athens’ suburb – Kifisia – and borrowing its name, the Residence in Kifisia occupies 350 square meters and was designed to suit the lifestyle of a family with four members. Due to the small, almost square shape of the plot, architects of N. Koukourakis & Associates created a sense of privacy and comfort by adding open air spaces. The ground floor spaces – foyer, sitting room, rest room, dining room, kitchen – were flooded with natural light, while the upstairs was separated into living, working and resting spaces for the kids. The second floor was reserved for the master bedroom, gathering views of the surroundings and featuring a vast veranda. Guest quarters and service rooms were designed to occupy the basement level. Adorned on the outside with coffee-grey coating and wood, this modern residence is strongly connected to the outdoors through extensive use of glass, but feels private and comfortable at the same time. Catching the attention of passers-by with its imposing white architecture, the Lotus House rises two stories in the air, just enough to create a stunning first impression. Its two stories were designed to wrap around a pond with a natural spring and combine modern architecture and a comfortable lifestyle. Located in Country Heights, Kajang, Malaysia, this residence is made of the main living volume spreading over two floors and an additional guest pavilion connected to the main building via an elongated covered walkway. Operating with as much natural light as possible, the architects of 29 Design imagined this residence embracing its ascension to the sky by displaying a set of very organized, carefully placed vertical lines. Seen on the front facade, sides and defining the connection between interiors and exterior on the garden side, these vertical windows filter natural light for the living spaces and acts as beacons during nighttime. No wonder the interiors are so bright!

Set in a spectacular surrounding, in Queenstown’s elite golf club Jacks Point, the Coburn Residence is defined by views of the nearby lake and mountains. The client brief included the need for large entertaining spaces that would be strongly connected to the outdoors and separate master and guest bedrooms. Connecting with the surrounding landscape, the residence designed by Harris Butt Architecture stretches over a total surface of 712 square meters. Built with locally resourced materials, the house displays an honest, uncomplicated architecture that could easily be transformed into a boutique hotel if necessary. Concrete structural walls were dressed with schist from the site, creating a powerful connection to the property in both material choice and layout overlooking beautiful vistas. Three volumes shelter the main spaces – a rectangular living zone, a square bedroom zone and a linear gallery connecting the two. The garage was hidden under the building, acting as the base of the structure. Focusing on different views surrounding the property, architects designed a modern retreat in a memorable environment.

Villa Storingavika was designed by Bergen-based studio Saunders Architecture and is located in the outskirts of Bergen, Norway. Especially developed for a family with two children, the villa overlooks breathtaking fjords and a stretch of Norway’s west coast archipelago and answers its inhabitants needs for peaceful and comfortable living. According to the architects,“Villa Storingavika is a textbook example of a regional modernism, combining the modern gesture of wide spanning platforms of space with the traditional forms and materials of Bergen’s light-framed timber houses. The building’s proportions are also akin to Bergen’s maritime architecture and its long history of two-storey timber buildings. Translating this established building approach to a restrained, contemporary volume links the house to its context, and ties it indelibly to the site”. The overall impression one gets when looking at this residence (and its striking natural environment) is that of timber vessel, offering unobstructed views of the coastline.

Interior designer Rees Roberts collaborated with Steven Harris Architects to create a stunning modern house located in Cabo San Lucas. The private residence named Casa Finisterra boasts building materials like concrete, stone, metal and glass. Composed of private courtyards and elegantly designed interiors, the house on the Baja Peninsula overlooks sparkling waters and was designed to appear as part of the landscape, with large expanses of glass opening the interiors towards the views. A neutral color palette including white, beige, and grey was pierced by dark accents and adorned with minimalist furniture to create a calming effect and avoid taking the focus off the surrounding landscape. Stone patios connect the volumes of the house and act as part of the interior/exterior space arrangement, allowing inhabitants to make the most of such a splendid location.
